Tips for maintaining your ocular prosthesis
1
Handling
As your appointment progresses I will teach you how to remove and replace a prosthesis until you are comfortable enough to be independent.
Your ocular prosthesis must be worn at all times, even at night. It is advisable to handle it as little as possible to avoid excess secretions caused by friction of the conjunctival mucosa.
3
Follow-up by health professionals
Monitoring of the patient and their ocular prosthesis by an ocularist, ophthalmologist and/or surgeon is essential because it helps ensure good ocular health and can help detect certain anomalies.
It is highly recommended to have your ocular prosthesis repolished every 6 months by your ocularist. This removes any deposits of mucus and scratches left on the surface, and will thus prolong comfort.
It is also an opportunity to monitor ocular health, the condition of the cavity and the implant as well as to check the tolerance of the prosthesis.
2
Cleaning
Every day, you can clean the surface of your ocular prosthesis (without removing it) using a compress previously rinsed with physiological serum or with an eye solution.
It is advisable to remove your ocular prosthesis at most twice a month in order to do a more thorough cleaning with physiological serum or an ocular solution.
4
Don't do!
In the past, schnapps (well known in Alsace) was consumed as a medicine because it has disinfectant properties...but still avoid using it on your ocular prosthesis!!
When cleaning, never use alcohol-based products. This can damage and seriously deteriorate the resin of your ocular prosthesis.
